I have only been doing this segment on TV for a few weeks, but one of the shows I recommended was Survivor. I have watched it for years and have enjoyed it. I can’t really explain why because I don’t like dirty play, but I do root for the underdog.
Now, I’m taking back my recommendation. Last week’s episode left a bad taste in my mouth and has done damage to the #MeToo movement which I feel has been needed for a while. Women need to be listened to and believed, not dismissed. Survivor has to take the blame for this misstep in their handling of the situation.
For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, one of the contestant, Kellee, was being sexual harassed by another contestant, Dan. From what was being shown, he made Kellee feel uncomfortable, like touching her and kissing her hair. There is no excuse for a grown man to behave in such a manner, especially when she told him to stop.
What made matters worse is that two other constestants, two of my former favorites—Missy and Elizabeth—played the incidents into the game by lying to Janet to make her switch her vote. Kellee was uncomfortable enough to have gone to production with her concerns. Can you imagine how hard it must have been for her to have asked for help? When she did, Survivor didn’t even tell her they issued Dan a warning. Didn’t she have a right to know that they were ‘protecting’ her?
Janet was a decent, honorable person for taking up for Kellee and she thought the other women. Missy and Elizabeth…well…they have to live with their decision because it was a bad one.
One of the inherent problems with the #MeToo movement is for the woman to be believed and not dismissed. Watching Survivor, you could see how Kellie felt and why she felt that way. Then, Survivor took a huge step backward for such an important cause and allowed Missy and Elizabeth to use sexual harassment to be played in the game.
It was just wrong…wrong…wrong.
Survivor should have taken Dan from the game because of the close contact that he had with Kellie. Survivor didn’t protect Kellie from the abuse whether the abuse was intentional or not. Dan might be a ‘great’ guy, but he didn’t respect Kellie’s personal boundaries.
This is serious and not some game.
Survivor failed. In the past, I think they have done a great job in handling difficult situations, but not this time. Yes, Survivor mimicks live. This is why it is so difficult for a woman to be believed. You have a real victim and then you have two women that make false allegations.
Sexual harassment is a real thing. Women need to realize it too!
After a week, I’m still not okay with the episode. Unless something else is done to rectify this situation, I won’t be watching Survivor anymore. I hate this because I love watching Boston Rob this season. I’ve missed him on Survivor. Good luck to Janet. I sincerely hope she wins. She’s the only one left that deserves it.
As for Kellee, check out an interview with her here.
